Bahia Grass

Bahia Grass is the toughest warm-season grass for hot, dry, and sandy conditions. Originally selected for roadsides and pastures, it has become popular for residential lawns where a low-maintenance, durable turf is more important than a pristine appearance. It handles poor soils and drought that would kill other grasses.

How to Identify Bahia Grass

  • ✓Coarse, V-shaped blade (4–8 mm wide) with a folded base
  • ✓Medium green color, slightly lighter than Bermuda
  • ✓Distinctive tall seed heads (two long racemes in a Y shape) that appear frequently
  • ✓Spreads by short rhizomes and stolons to form an open, somewhat coarse turf
  • ✓Deep, extensive root system — roots can reach 8 feet deep

Mowing

Recommended height3–4 inches
FrequencyEvery 7–10 days

Frequent mowing is needed primarily to manage seed heads, which appear almost continuously in summer. A two-pass mowing strategy (height + cleanup pass) helps manage them.

Watering

Weekly amount0.5–1 inch
Frequency1–2 times per week

Exceptional drought tolerance once established. Its deep root system allows it to access moisture unavailable to shallow-rooted grasses. In Florida, it often survives entirely on rainfall.

Fertilization

TimingSpring and summer (April and July)
Frequency2 times per year

Low fertilizer requirements. Iron may be needed in alkaline soils to maintain green color. Over-fertilizing encourages weeds and excessive seed-head production.

Common Problems

Persistent Seed Heads

Bahia continuously produces tall, wiry seed heads throughout summer that are difficult to mow cleanly. This is the #1 complaint. Growth regulators can reduce seed-head frequency.

Dollar Weed (Pennywort)

Round, shiny leaves in moist areas. Common in Bahia lawns with excessive irrigation or poor drainage. Reduce watering and apply a broadleaf herbicide.

Mole Crickets

Underground insects that tunnel through soil, killing roots and creating raised tunnels. A major pest of Bahia. Apply insecticide in late spring targeting newly hatched nymphs.
