Overseeding

Overseeding is the practice of spreading grass seed over an existing lawn to increase density, repair bare areas, or introduce improved grass varieties. Timing is everything β€” seed needs mild temperatures, consistent moisture, and good soil contact to germinate successfully.

When to Overseed

Cool-Season Grasses

Fall is ideal: 45–65Β°F soil temperatures, typically late August to mid-October. Spring (March–April) is secondary and riskier due to summer heat arriving before seedlings mature.

Warm-Season Grasses

Late spring to early summer (May–June) for warm-season overseeding with the same species. Warm-season lawns are commonly overseeded with perennial ryegrass in October for winter color.

Soil Temperature Trigger

50–65Β°F for cool-season grasses; 65–70Β°F for warm-season grasses

Fall overseeding of cool-season grass gives seedlings the entire cool season to establish before facing summer heat the following year β€” the best possible timing.

Why It Matters

  • βœ“Thin turf is an open invitation for weeds β€” a dense lawn is the best weed control available
  • βœ“Older grass varieties lack the disease resistance and drought tolerance of modern cultivars β€” overseeding introduces improvements
  • βœ“Bare or thin spots from summer stress, grubs, or disease need active intervention to recover
  • βœ“Regular overseeding maintains density as individual grass plants age and die over their 3–5 year lifespan

How to Overseed

  1. 1Mow the existing lawn short (1.5–2 inches) and bag the clippings to allow seed-to-soil contact
  2. 2Core aerate the lawn before overseeding β€” the aeration holes provide perfect seed beds and dramatically improve germination rates
  3. 3Apply seed at the recommended rate for your grass species (e.g., 4–8 lbs/1,000 sq ft for Kentucky Bluegrass; 6–10 lbs for tall fescue)
  4. 4Lightly top-dress with a thin layer of compost or topsoil to improve seed-to-soil contact
  5. 5Water lightly 2–3 times per day to keep the top inch of soil consistently moist until germination (7–21 days depending on species)

Common Mistakes

βœ—Overseeding in late spring for cool-season grasses
β†’Seedlings need 6–8 weeks of cool temperatures to establish. Late spring seeding means seedlings face summer heat before they're ready. Use fall for primary overseeding.
βœ—Poor seed-to-soil contact
β†’Seed lying on top of thick thatch or dry soil won't germinate. Aerate or rake the soil surface before seeding. Seed needs contact with moist soil, not debris.
βœ—Inconsistent watering after seeding
β†’Germinating seed that dries out dies. Twice-daily light watering is critical until germination. Reduce frequency (but increase depth) as seedlings establish.
βœ—Applying pre-emergent herbicide at the same time
β†’Pre-emergent prevents ALL seeds β€” including your grass seed β€” from germinating. Do not apply pre-emergent for 8–10 weeks after overseeding.
