Core Aeration: What It Does and How to Do It Right
Renting a core aerator for an afternoon is one of the highest-value things a homeowner can do for a lawn โ but only if the aeration itself is done right. Wrong tool, wrong depth, or raking up the plugs afterward all quietly cancel out most of the benefit.

What Core Aeration Actually Does
A core aerator uses hollow tines to pull small plugs of soil โ typically 2โ3 inches long and about half an inch wide โ out of the ground and deposit them on the surface. Where each plug used to be is now an open channel straight into the root zone.
Those channels do three things at once:
- Relieve compaction. Foot traffic, mowing equipment, and clay-heavy soil all compress the ground over time, squeezing out the pore space roots, water, and air need. Removing plugs physically creates that pore space back.
- Improve water and gas exchange. Water that used to run off or pool on a compacted surface can now soak straight down. Oxygen reaches roots that were previously suffocating in dense soil.
- Give fertilizer, lime, and seed a direct path to the root zone. Anything applied after aerating drops into the holes instead of getting trapped on top of thatch or hardpan.

Core Aeration vs. Spike Aeration
This is the one piece of equipment homeowners most often get wrong, because spike aerators โ including shoe attachments with spikes strapped to the bottom โ are cheaper and more widely available.
Core aerators remove material. Hollow or coring tines pull actual plugs of soil out of the ground, leaving open channels. This is what creates lasting compaction relief.
Spike aerators displace material. A solid spike is pushed into the ground and pulled back out without removing anything โ it just shoves soil sideways to make room for itself. In compacted or clay soil, that sideways pressure can pack the soil around the hole even tighter than before.
For anything other than very light, already-loose soil, a core aerator is the only tool worth using. If you're renting or hiring, confirm the equipment is a true core (also called "plug" or "hollow-tine") aerator, not a spike or slicing aerator.
How Deep and How Many Passes

After Aerating
Leave the plugs where they land. It's tempting to rake them up because the lawn looks rough for a week or two, but the plugs are doing useful work as they break down โ they return organic matter and soil microbes to the thatch layer. Raking them up throws away part of the benefit. They'll disappear on their own within 2โ4 weeks, faster with rain or mowing.
Overseed and fertilize the same day, while holes are still open. This is the single highest-leverage follow-up. Seed dropped into an aeration hole gets real soil contact and some protection from foot traffic โ germination rates run well above broadcast seed dropped on undisturbed, thatchy turf. Fertilizer applied at the same time reaches the root zone directly instead of sitting on top of thatch.
Water if the soil has dried out. If aerating and overseeding aren't happening in the same session, or if it hasn't rained since, water lightly to keep the holes and any seed in them from drying out.
Renting vs. Owning
A 30-inch walk-behind core aerator rents for roughly $60โ80 for a half-day at most equipment rental yards, which is enough time to aerate an average suburban lawn with a pass or two of slack. Buying a comparable machine runs $1,000 or more โ rarely worth it unless aerating several properties a year.

Common Mistakes
Using a spike aerator on compacted soil. It can leave the lawn more compacted right around each hole than before you started. Confirm you're renting or hiring true core aeration.
